6/7/2023 0 Comments Waub rice bookNo one should have to experience that." Yet, I don't think I truly understand. I can hear of some atrocity happening on the reserve or in the residential schools and say and mean, "That's terrible. Even when I read or hear true stories, despite a real desire to understand, I think I am protected by that personal detachment. Interested yes, but with a certain amount of objective distance. I am a white woman and when I read aboriginal fiction, it is, I think, like a someone looking on or in, examining. But what was strikingly authentic, crystal clear and true were the stories shared by the participants. We are in a sweat lodge afterall the steam and glow from the grandfathers wafts and shimmers throughout the book. That is not to say that the book was lacking in spirituality and native culture. Oh he might have been in there, but I didn't notice if he was. Well having read all 85 pages of this book, I didn't notice any trickster. I have this idea that when I figure out the role this character plays, the better I will understand native culture and spirituality. I usually find it challenging I'm always grappling with that trickster dude. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Slow horses and dead lionsI wasn’t convinced that Gary Oldman’s greasy slob would be quite upper crust enough for Lamb – whom I envisioned after reading the books as more fallen angel than sarf London thug – but Oldman has inhabited the role so thoroughly, down to the last fart, that it’s hard to imagine another actor playing it. He's the gangmaster of the bunch of shop-worn spies known as "slow horses" who have been sent to the career graveyard of Slough House, a squalid building near London’s Barbican Centre. That’s largely down to the indelible characters Herron has created, led by the monstrously flatulent Jackson Lamb. Maybe so, but to devotees of both books and dramatisation they are still uniquely pleasurable. Predictably, the literary critical backlash has already begun: the books are formulaic, the magic doesn’t last, etc. Mick Herron is now preparing the ninth Slough House novel for publication in 2023 (there have also been three related novellas in the sequence), while the TV series is just embarking on volume two, Dead Lions. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Jacob by jacquelyn frankHis family is as well and he will do anything he can to keep them safe. Being Enforcer is not Adam’s only priority, however. He takes his job seriously and in this time he is the most revered Enforcer of demonkind. The war between demons and vampires is going strong. When we meet Adam, we have gone back in time about 400 years. Together they have powers unmatched by any other and when they kill a beloved demon couple, those that are left behind are so affected by the unexpected tragedy, no one will ever be the same. Unfortunately, the mind demon Ruth is still at large and her threat is now compounded by the fact that she has mated the vampire Nicodemous. We revisit most of the characters from previous books and get a quick update and some insight to their lives. The story begins with a prologue in the year 2008. Frank created in her Nightwalker series and because I couldn’t remember Adam at all, I was even more intrigued. Adam by Jacquelyn Frank (The Nightwalkers #6)Īdam is book six in Jacquelyn Frank’s Nightwalker series and it was such a sweet surprise because I had been under the impression that the series had ended with Noah’s book, three years ago. I firmly believe that in order to really fully appreciate just how special Kimi ni Todake is, you have to already be a veteran of at least a dozen or more of its shoujo peers. While her situation is a bit contrived and not overly realistic, the way it is presented is so wonderfully sweet and beautiful that it is impossible not to love. The remaining story is one of self discovery as Sawako experiences the first feelings of love and friendship she has ever felt. This all changes when she meets a boy named Kazehaya who is the first to truly see her and slowly she begins to draw herself out of her shell. Desperately wanting others to understand her she is instead shunned and feared by her classmates. Our heroine is Sawako, a sweet and gentle girl with an awkward personality and an uncanny resemblance to Sadako from The Ring. It takes all the classic shoujo romance stereotypes and plot devices and flips them on its head leaving us with a thoroughly rewarding and groundbreaking romance.Īt first, Kimi ni Todake drew me in before I saw its first frame of film with its story concept. Only rarely does a series break the mold its genre has cast for it and even more uncommonly does it set itself apart from all others. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Snorri prose eddaThe Prose Edda appears to have functioned similarly to a contemporary textbook, with the goal of assisting Icelandic poets and readers in understanding the subtleties of alliterative verse, and to grasp the meaning behind the many kennings used in skaldic poetry. 1300 to 1600, seven manuscripts of the Prose Edda differ from one another in notable ways, which provides researchers with independent textual value for analysis. The Prose Edda consists of four sections: The Prologue, a euhemerized account of the Norse gods Gylfaginning, which provides a question and answer format that details aspects of Norse mythology (consisting of approximately 20,000 words), Skáldskaparmál, which continues this format before providing lists of kennings and heiti (approximately 50,000 words) and Háttatal, which discusses the composition of traditional skaldic poetry (approximately 20,000 words).ĭating from c.
